Yelde Hall

December 16, 2010

This is one of the cards I send out through Postcrossing and the only one that I have in my personal collection as well.

It is also available for swap so leave a comment if you want to trade and I’ll see what I can do.

It shows the Yelde Hall,  an old building in my hometown of Chippenham.

The caption on the back reads:

This Grade I listed building dates from the 14th century and was originally the only building in the Market Place, housing the town’s lock up and Burgess Hall.

However, nowadays it is used as a tourist information centre and is, ironically, where I bought the postcard from.

St. Andrews Church

I’d thought I’d start off with one of my hometown. Chippenham is where I’ve lived for all my live. It is situated in south-west England halfway between Bristol and Swindon.

I don’t have many Chippenham postcards in my own collection but send a few out to other people through postcrossing. Sadly there aren’t that many about (which is understandable given the size of the town, but there was a time when even the tourist info centre didn’t have any).

My mum found this one in our house a few weeks ago. She doesn’t know where it originally came from which is a shame as I wouldn’t mind sending some, but it seems a few years old so it’s probably not available anymore. 😦

It shows St. Andrew’s Church and has the following caption on the back:

In past times the open space before St. Andrew’s Church saw public hangings. Stocks and a whipping post were also used here. Early morning in modern times are more peaceful.
